SAGE X is a Hit!

posted Nov 28, 2017, 3:24 PM by Bob H

Here is an unsolicited comment made by one of our recent clients!

Wow, Great Fly Rod. I really like the new X action. Sage makes a great blank but you make it a precision instrument. The way the ferules fit and the finish is perfect. The guides are absolutely perfect and the handle is exquisite. The full wells handle fits my hand beautifully. I loaded a SA Shark Wave GPX on to a Nautilus FWX 5/6 and the line flew effortlessly to 60'. I have a few factory made Sage Ones and my biggest complaint is the small guides. SA GPX 8wt line will not slide through my 8wt Sage One guides. The biggest opposition to custom rods that I hear is, if you break it the factory won't fix it. First of all I have never broken a fly rod. A lot of anglers have a myriad of extenuating circumstances that lead to the damaging of a fly rod. On several trips every summer we fish from canoes. Hoping in and out of the canoe all day with the rods bungied to the seats or lining the boat down rapids or up and down the river bank we have never damaged a rod. Thanks so much, I love the rod. "Made in USA" Right on Brother. God Bless, travel safe and good luck. Rich.

Trade-in, Trade up program!

Lord of the Streams has a"Trade-in, Trade-UP" program.  If you have a rod that you are no longer using and want a new one, just give us a call and we will let you know what we will give you on your trade-in toward any rod that we sell.  We guarantee a minimum of $100
trade-in toward the purchase of any  premium rod valued at $695 or greater.  Whether you want a new SAGE, LOOP, Redington, etc. rod, we can make your new purchase more affordable.  The trade-in rod must still be in usable condition.

We prefer rods from reputable manufacturers like SAGE, R.L. Winston, G. Loomis, LOOP, and a few others.  However, if the rod is still usable and you bought it at Walmart,  we will still honor the trade-in toward a premium rod purchase.  If you have questions, please let us know.  You can call us at 509 998-2321 or you may email us at

SNAKE BRAND snake guides are now used exclusively by Lord of the Streams!

posted Sep 24, 2016, 6:09 PM by Bob H

We are very happy to announce that SNAKE BRAND snake guides are now the only snake guides that Lord of the Streams will use on all of our custom rods.  In our opinion, SNAKE BRAND snake guides are the best snake guides made anywhere.  They cost more but we only want to use the best on our custom rods.  Unlike most snake guides that are made in the Orient, SNAKE BRAND guides are made exclusively in the United States in Washington State.  Their quality is unsurpassed in the industry.  The are also the only snake guides made with concave feet that won't scratch your rod and will allow the guides to sit closer to the rod blank.  Instead of being shaped like a tear drop, they are round when you look through the guides.  This allows the line to shoot more easily.  These guides have been available as an upgrade at an extra charge on our rods in the past.  They will now come standard on all of our rods!  When you choose Lord of the Streams, we want you to know that you are getting the best!

Epic custom rods now available!

posted Oct 1, 2014, 7:54 PM by Bob H   [ updated Dec 30, 2019, 10:53 AM ]

There is a wonderful company located in New Zealand (the home of "Big" trout) that is making some very nice blanks. The brand is "EPIC."

Epic is owned by the SWIFT fly fishing company.   These rods are truly rods built to catch fish.  EPIC graphite rods (called carbon fibre down under) are lighter than the newest SAGE blanks and are simply a delight to fish.  These graphite rods are available in 5 and 6 weights and are 9' four piece models.  I would classify them as being a hair faster than medium-fast but not quite as fast as the new SAGE X.  We have one 5 weight available for sale at this time.  It is quite reasonably priced at only $777 plus shipping. This rod has SNAKE BRAND guides and a SNAKE BRAND Buckeye Burl uplocking reel seat.  The wraps are scarlet with gold and black highlight wraps.  It also has our finest cork handle in our own half wells design.

EPIC also makes wonderful "FAST GLASS" fiberglass rods.  These blanks are great! Many fly casters that test rods at our shop end up favoring these fiberglass rods over the SAGE, LOOP, and other graphite rods when tested side by side.  The owner of our shop carries a 4 weight fiberglass 5-piece EPIC rod when he travels on his motorcycle.  The rod fits in a 21" case and packs easily in his saddlebag.
A rod like this also sells for $777 plus shipping.

EPIC fiberglass trout rods are available in 3 through 6 weight.  These rods are very strong and we cannot imagine them ever breaking on a fish.  Please call or email with any questions.

SAGE X-One of the best Fast Action rods we have used.

posted Nov 6, 2013, 12:38 PM by Bob H   [ updated Feb 18, 2017, 6:37 PM ]

If you like a fast action rod that throws incredibly tight loops, the new SAGE X is one of the best we have ever used.  We can feel it load and it allows us to throw some of our tightest loops ever.  This is not a rod that you want to use when you are looking for a really delicate presentation or when you are throwing a hopper-dropper or double nymph rig.  However it is one that may be your go-to rod when the wind is howling or when you are wading the flats, or when one cast to a distant fish is all you get. Tight loops, big fly, streamers, very high line speed with feel, this rod does these things very well.

You can have it in a SAGE factory made configuration or in a Lord of the Streams custom. Call us for pricing.

LOOP OPTI STREAM 5 wt. rod redesigned for 2019- The LOOP OPTI K2 series. Delayed again But the new 7X rods are here now!

posted Apr 27, 2013, 10:13 PM by Bob H   [ updated Jul 18, 2019, 3:57 PM ]

This rod was redesigned for the 2019 season.  However, due to a problem in the manufacturing, LOOP rejected the first shipment and the rods are not being sold at this time.  LOOP has very high standards and the rods simply did not pass their inspections. Hopefully, the rods will be available later this year.  We compoliment LOOP for rejecting this first shipment of rods.  There is nothing worse than selling inferior rods to clients.

Those of you who are knowledgeable about the world of fly fishing know the name of George Anderson of Yellowstone Anglers.  George has helped design some of the best rods in the world. Each year, George has a 5 weight competition and rates rods in that competition.  He calls it his "Shoot-Out."    He does not rate all of the best rods in the world but chooses a wide selection to test.  For the past four years, he chose the LOOP OPTI STREAM rod to test.  This LOOP OPTI STREAM rod was not the best rod that LOOP made but it may very well have been the best rod for the money that LOOP made.  The OPTI STREAM 5 weight came in second out of all of the 5 wt. rods in  the "Shoot Out" in 2013.    It beat every SAGE, Winston, Orvis, Hardy and many others.  It was rated in the top 3 rods for three consecutive years!  It has been replaced by the LOOP K2.  Once this rod does reach the USA market, we hope it will be even better than the Opti Stream.

While we agree that the Loop OPTI STREAM was a very fine rod, it did very well considering it is not even the top of the line in the LOOP rod line up!  It was the 2nd best rod that LOOP made.   Even this rod is being replaced by LOOP.  Their new top of the line rod is the LOOP 7X rod.  It comes in a variety of weight from 3 through 12 weights.  Call us for our wonderful pricing on this rod.  It is available in both medium-fast and fast actions.

Regardless of which LOOP rod you decide upon, Lord of the Streams is the place to buy the rod.  We are one of the top authorized LOOP dealers in the USA

We will have the new K2 9' 5wt rod in stock as soon as they are released.  Most of the 7X rod models are available now.

Big Fish- What kind of rod to use?

posted Mar 28, 2013, 12:24 PM by Bob H   [ updated Jun 20, 2019, 2:49 PM ]

Do you want to actually hook and land big fish or do you simply want to cast for distance?

This may seem like a strange question to some but it really is not. Many fly fishers want a rod that allows them to make the longest cast possible.  If that is what you want, there are few rods that will beat the SAGE METHOD or the old SAGE XP.  If you are in a location where you can use larger tippets,  It is fine to use really fast rods and they can be a lot of fun.  However, if you are after big, wise old fish that spook at 1, 2 , or 3X tippets and you need to use a 5X or smaller tippet and size 20 flies to entice the
m, we recommend that you forget ultra-fast, stiff rods because more often than you want to, you are going to break the fish off when it gets close to the net.  Now, if you don't mind repeated LDRs (long distance releases) then keep using really fast rods.

If you wish to be able to make long casts, generate plenty of line speed, and actually bring those big fish to the net, please consider the  LOOP CROSS S1.  The
LOOP CROSS S1 medium -fast rod was created by the people from Sweden that founded LOOP and who simply live to fly fish.  (Thank you Christer and Tomas.)  These are true fly fishermen that design "Fly Rods for landing fish."

The proof is in the performance.  In the early Spring of 2012, I took a trip to the North Platte (Miracle Mile and Greys Reef) in Wyoming, the
Green River below Flaming Gorge in Utah, and the Beaverhead in Montana.  Using the CROSS S1, I landed a higher percentage of hooked "Big Fish" than I ever have with any other fly rod!  The weather was cold (down to 15 degrees with 40+ MPH winds).  The 6 weight CROSS S1 protected 5X tippets incredibly well.

Simply put.  In the graphite rods of today, we have not used any rod that outperforms the LOOP CROSS S1 with its wonderful nanotechnology.  It is stronger than any other graphite rod that I am aware of, 30% stronger than its closest competitor we have been told.  It generates wonderful line speed.  It recovers more quickly than any fly rod of its type that we have used and most importantly, it protects tippets when that big fish is hooked.  The pictures below were caught by the first custom LOOP CROSS S1 in the world.  I made it for myself.  (many others have been made and sold but this is #1).

I took eight 6-weight rods on the trip mentioned above, including the three rods that were previo
usly my favorite 6-weights (The SAGE Z-AXIS, the Winston BIIx, and we took the 5 wt. LOOP OPTI Stream.)  I started fishing with the Custom LOOP CROSS S1 and never felt the desire to use any of the other rods. All of the fish below, plus approximately 70 other fish, were caught on this trip with that one rod. Many of the fish were between 20 and 24".

I was delighted with the rod performance.  While we can no longer get the LOOP blanks, but you can own a factory rod in the same weight that I used.  Call for an exact price and ask about any "In-Shop Specials."

LOOP CROSS S1 Blanks and Custom rod status

posted Mar 6, 2013, 1:56 PM by Bob H   [ updated Jul 18, 2019, 3:58 PM ]

LOOP is no longer replacing broken custom LOOP rod sections with plain blanks.  They are instead replacing broken custom rod sections with factory made sections.  Therefore, the guide spacing may not be correct; the guides may not match and the thread colors will probably not match.  Therefore, we are no longer making or repairing LOOP custom rods.   If you are looking for a LOOP, we recommend that you buy a factory made rod and we do sell them.  We are still a LOOP dealer.  LOOP factory rods are quite good.

If you would like us to build a custom rod for you we have SAGE and
Epic, blanks available for your consideration.  Please email for more information.  We ship to all states except Washington due to Washington's tax structure.  If you live in Washington, you will have to pick up your rod at our shop.

All LOOP factory rods are available at this time.

A very delightful fly rod, The Loop Cross S1 - Watch the Videos

posted Mar 16, 2012, 7:16 PM by Bob H   [ updated Jun 6, 2019, 7:11 PM ]

The LOOP CROSS S1 is our number one selling rod for 2012, 2013, 2014  and 2015, and 2016. It outsold all SAGE and Winston models. The SAGE X became our number one seller in 2017 and holds that spot in 2018.

As the owner of this company, I have owned the best rods on the planet and I believe that  the CROSS S1 is one of the most remarkable rods I have ever fished.
It is simply outstanding! A five weight rod with a lifting break point that is higher than 40 kilos is just remarkable!  This rod will bend in almost a complete U with a huge fish on the line and not think twice about it.  Imagine doing that with a graphite fly rod that also generates high line speed and casts like a dream.  Counter-intuitive isn't it?  This is a rod that you can feel load effortlessly and casts as far with a single haul as most people can cast with a double!  A beautiful rod made with American components.  A light rod that is both beautiful in design and performance and has great -- (Are you ready for this?) ----- durability!  No, you cannot slam it in a car door but I cannot envision it breaking under normal fishing pressures.

Check out the videos below of the rod in action and you will see why I am excited and I think you will be too!

The single hand rod sequences in the first and second videos were filmed at Jurassic Lake, Argentina with a 5wt rod!!!!
The Tarpon in the 3rd video was landed with a 9' 10 weight rod in only 6 minutes.  Absolutely amazing!

The LOOP CROSS S1 also comes in spey rods as well as single hand rods (including a 7 weight switch rod) !  The  S1 series comes in 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 9, 10, 11 and 12 weight single hand rods.  They also come in 6 and 7 weight switch rods and 7, 8, 9, and 10 weight double hand rods.

The 5 through 8 weights are also made in a fast action version .  Please call or email
for availability.
